This exceptional bass viol (bass viola da gamba) dating back to 1957 was originally owned by a professional musician, and its extraordinary craftsmanship makes it immediately recognizable as a master instrument for professional use. The vibrating string length of this 7 string bass viol measures 68.8 cm. The dated original label confirms its provenance from the atelier of Theo Dellen in Voorburg near Den Haag, which is linked to the famous Koninklijk Conservatorium. The fine quality of the tone woods is evident in the exquisite flaming of the four-part back, ribs, neck and scroll, and Theo Dellen exercised the greatest care in selecting and crafting this fine bass viol. The accurately and stylishly shaped sound holes were masterfully carved and feature fluting that can only be performed by an experienced hand. The elegant appearance of this bass viol is complemented by the small, elegant rosette and the broad purfling. Two repairs were made on the top of the bass viol, and the back joint was professionally restored, but none of these spots have any impact on the sound or stability of this exceptional instrument. We are pleased to offer this outstanding bass viol with case.
