This fine antique Viennese cello is a magnificent instrument from Beethoven's day and was crafted sometime between 1800-1820. The delicate purfling and the deeply carved and expressive scroll indicate the sensitive work of an experienced master, an artisan who chose exceptionally sophisticated maple with tight and subtle flames for the back of the instrument. The varnish there has developed a wonderful interplay of colours, whereas on the top of the cello it has darkened to nearly black. This makes the eloquent traces of use on the upper margins that much more striking – a sign that this old stringed instrument was played often and intensely for generations, as well as a tribute to the outstanding quality of its sound which demanding musicians will find equally compelling today. The cello has been maintained in nearly crack-free condition, with only a minor patch to the outer edge of the left sound hole on the top; a few insignificant and meticulously repaired cracks along the ribs and a reinforced peg box are both quite common amongst instruments of this age. After having been painstakingly set up by the specialists at our restoration workshop, this nearly two hundred year old cello is now in excellent condition and top musical condition. Large and beautifully balanced, its resonant sound opens up a wide range of musical interpretations; the warm fullness in the lower registers is complemented by a delightful melodious brightness and a slightly sweet note. The cello sound is powerful in all of its registers, and this fine Viennese cello is the perfect choice for musicians who want a reliable partner for playing in ensembles of all kinds.
