3/4 violin, powerful sound, Germany or England

This unusual 3/4 sized violin is a perfectly preserved instrument from the 1920s that was patterned after an Italian model. Its well-defined edges, broadly flamed two-piece maple back and large, distinctive scroll converge into a highly individual style whose provenance is difficult to place with any certainty. It could hail from either the German or the English violin-making tradition — the two schools are closely related and are often difficult to tell apart. The design, the characteristic top arching, the particular calibration of the scroll and certain aspects of the red-brown varnish on a luminous, golden yellow ground coat indicate that the violin was more likely made in England. Its outstanding voice supports this supposition, as it matches the sound of other first-rate English instruments and is therefore particularly recommended: strong like that of a 4/4-sized violin, dark, clear and dominant, rich in overtones and powerful.
