Antique Parisian master violin from the early work of Paul Jombar, the finest craftsmanship with a typically French, powerful sound.

Paul Jombar (1868-1936) was a highly talented French violin maker who quickly made a glittering name forhimself in the sophisticated circle of Parisian  luthiers  at the turn of the 20th century. The master violin offered here, no. 94 from 1906, is a powerful example of his incisive style, which he was able to express with consummate craftsmanship.

The high tonal and aesthetic level at which Paul Jombar was already operating with mature aplomb at this time is astonishing - this violin still belongs to his early work in a certain sense, created in the last year of his first own workshop on Rue Rochechouart, which he opened in 1892 after six successful years at Gand & Bernardel. Its sound reveals a knowledgeable engagement with the demands of the Parisian music scene of the time and meets the highest standards with its exceptional potency; its distinctly French, mature character combines dark facets with a great wealth of overtones and voluminous radiance to create a musical personality of the highest individuality. The glistening bordeaux red oil varnish on the noble, wide-grained spruce of the top and the tightly flamed maple of the two-piece back is a self-confident sign of the impeccable craftsmanship with which this Paul Jombar violin has been crafted in every detail, from the finely cut sound holes to the precisely executed edges and corners and the elegantly blackened, artfully engraved scroll. During a thorough inspection, our experts were convinced that two older repairs on the left side of the soundboard, carried out with the utmost care, are solid and have no effect on the sound. With them, the instrument, on which its previous owners have left virtually no trace, is in excellent condition.
