Aldo Zani - an Italian violin maker whose success is marked by numerous gold medals at renowned competitions

Numerous gold medals at highly regarded competitions and a wide-ranging oeuvre are defining characteristics of the great success achieved by Aldo Zani. And this viola expresses the total sum of his well-honed artisanry. Born in 1922, Aldo Zani ranked amongst the rare protagonists of a tradition-rich craft who attained world-class standing without ever having completed an apprenticeship at a famous workshop or attended a major violin-making school. That makes the awards this autodidact won even more meaningful. He first entered an exhibition at the very early age of 15, submitting three instruments in Cremona violin making competition. Zani brought home his first medals in 1955 and 1956 in Rome, followed by further victories in 1957 in Florence, 1959 in Ascoli Piceno, 1960 in Pegi and 1971 and 1978 in Bagnacavallo. Given the achievements throughout Aldo Zani's impressive biography, the self-confidence this 1969 viola conveys is more than justified. This viola is in flawless condition, which sets the eye-catchingly loveliness of the wide-grained spruce top and the powerful narrow flames of the two-piece maple back in their best light. The viola's aesthetic is further accentuated by a rich luminous oil varnish that is highly transparent. The large scroll is opulently carved in a typical Italian style, and the delicately carved sound holes and painstakingly executed purfling all reflect Aldo Zani's great talent and rich wealth of experience. Our luthiers have meticulously set up this strongly recommended contemporary viola and made it ready to play. It will win you over with its warm yet bright sound which combines a gentle undertone with precision and clarity.
