Mittenwald viola, Made by Ottomar Hausmann, 1950

This large Mittenwald viola is a very traditional example of the Mittenwald school and was crafted from the finest domestic woods from the Karwendel mountains. It was built around 1950 by Ottomar Hausmann (b. 20 May 1923). Hausmann and his father emigrated from Schönbach in Bohemia to Mittenwald in 1946, and they ranked among the few displaced people who permanently resettled in the upper Isar valley. This Mittenwald viola is a genuine Hausmann instrument that features the original label and several brand marks; it is in very good condition and has a minor repair on the top which is covered by the tailpiece. Its appealingly luminous varnish has a light patina and only a few traces of use. After being carefully examined, our luthier worked over the good viola, and it is ready to be played. Its warm, open sound is mature, clear and very well balanced – our special recommendation!
