This French petite viola (38.0 cm) from the mid 19th century was made in a time, in which the viola was still considered as a minor instrument of violin family. It is a small viola with a warm viola sound and comfortable and feel of remarkable quality made in Mirecourt around 1850 on a model with rather flat archings and a charcateristic, fine scroll, typically cut in the French Mirecourt style of the time. The unknown maker who handcrafted this gorgeous petite viola in the mid 19th century did particularly well selecting the beautiful Vogesian woods with their interesting irregulair grains for their tonal qualities. The light brown varnish is highly patinated and underlines the special beauty of the tonewoods. Some acceptable signs from playing indicate that this petite viola has been serving excellent players for many years.
