This fine English Dodd violin bow was made by James Dodd Jr. (1792-1865) in the middle of the 19th century. He put his “J. Dodd” stamp on the frog and stick, much as his famous uncle John Dodd (1752-1839) had done before. The epoch-defining craftsmanship of his great ancestor had an important influence on James Dodd, who ran the family workshop in the London borough of Lambeth and received several awards for pieces he exhibited in the city. This bow is made of the best quality reddish-brown pernambuco and has sophisticated and stylish features: a tip plate of silver, a rounded ebony frog with a Parisian eye and a mother-of-pearl slide. Its sound is large, powerful and rich in volume, yet precise thanks to the strong stick. This James Dodd bow was made ready to play in our workshop, a certificate of authenticity issued by the highly-regarded expert Hieronymus Köstler is included in the price.
