Medium-strong French violin bow, very well balanced, with fine elasticity
François Lotte (1889–1970) was one of the Mirecourt bow makers of the early 20th century whose art had reached full maturity in the famous workshops of the Bazin family. In 1926, he founded his own atelier, which lasted well beyond the Second World War and where outstanding pieces were crafted even around 1945, such as the silver-mounted violin bow offered here, which is a musically compelling example of the finest craftsmanship.
Its medium-strength stick of reddish-brown pernambuco has a natural elasticity that is sensitively tuned in its design; it opens up extraordinary possibilities for variation, especially in the bowed strings, and is second to none in the collection of the Corilon catalog. Weighing only 54 g, the comfortably light François Lotte silver bow produces a large, warm sound which is surprisingly rich in volume and has a lucid precision in all positions, not least thanks to its perfect balance over a perfectly centered point of gravity. The detailed, delicate workmanship of the head and the ebony frog with a Parisian eye represent the high standard with which François Lotte had won the trust of discerning customers – as in the case of this bow from Charles Bailly, a well-established Mirecourt violin maker, whose name is stamped on the shaft above the frog.
