Max Möller, Amsterdam: violin bow circa 1940

Max Möller's Amsterdam atelier ranked amongst the most highly esteemed addresses for violin and bow making in 20th century Europe. It is known both for the original pieces it produces as well as for the prominent historic instruments which are studied and restored there. This environment of artisanal excellence was also the birthplace of this violin bow featuring an original stamp a rare piece from the era in which the company founder Max Paul Möller passed the management of the atelier to his son Max Guillaume Möller. The thick octagonal stick is compelling with good elasticity and a balance point at 26.5 cm of the overall length of 74.4 cm; it feels well-centred with a slight tendency towards the upper half. Beautifully structured light-brown pernambuco shapes the aesthetic of this bow, whose elegant head was stylishly crafted. In keeping with its advanced age, very light pressure points which have no impact on playability can be seen on the stick over the frog. The bow was completely set up and made ready to play in our specialist atelier. With its quality nickel fittings, the bow weighs 59.5g and offers sophisticated musicians the outstanding interpretative possibilities of a sophisticated, bright and somewhat sweet sound.
