This English violin bow is a rare piece that hails from the school established by Thomas Tubbs (approx. 1770-approx. 1830). With its outstanding playing qualities and ideal weight distribution, it shows that English bow making during the years between John Dodd and James Tubbs, Thomas Tubbs' legendary grandson, is frequently underestimated. The head of the sturdy round stick of beautiful brown pernambuco reflects the characteristic Thomas Tubbs style. The length of 74.0 cm, which is somewhat shorter than standard modern dimensions, is typical for the English bows crafted during this period which focussed on the work of John Dodd. Its balance point is located in the upper third of the stick towards the centre. The bow features an ebony frog with genuine silver fittings, a mother-of-pearl eye and a whitish-green mother-of-pearl slide. It also has a large, three-piece button with an ebony ring and a Parisian eye on the end. These elements of its design are a wonderful match for this powerful bow which generates a mature, clear and large sound.
