Roger Gérôme, French tortoiseshell violin bow

French violin bow by Roger Gérôme. With its brilliant, timbre-rich and brightly radiant tonal characteristics, this modern French violin bow by Roger Gérôme in Mirecourt is captivating. His stamp “Gérôme Devoivre” is a quality brand under which many excellent bow makers in the French capital city of violin making worked during the mid-20th century. Other luminaries included Georges Émile Barjonnet and Roger François Lotte. Gérôme himself came from a family of guitar and mandolin makers, and he learned his trade alongside his three brothers at their father’s atelier. In 1956 he took over his own business from Philibert Décombe, a workshop which until that time had focused on manufacturing accessories for making violins and bows. This bow was crafted in the 1960s-70s and was very probably made by Barjonnet, a student of Cuniot-Hury who perfected his art during his long years as an employee of Émile Auguste Ouchard and Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy before going on to produce his finest work at Gérôme. The strong round stick is a delicate piece made of reddish-brown pernambuco; a Parisian eye graces the silver-mounted frog made of genuine tortoiseshell. The bow weighs a total of 60.7 g with a balance point in the middle towards the frog, measuring at 26.1 cm (including button) of the total length of 74.3 cm. A repair of cracked tortoiseshell on the audience side of the tortoise shell frog explains the affordable price of this highly recommended violin bow.
