Rare violin by Neuner & Hornsteiner, a 19th century quality work from 1881
The ateliers of Neuner & Hornsteiner reached the zenith of their art in the mid-19th century, and from there they went on to define the standards of the Mittenwald craft for many years. They incorporated the influences of the finest international violin-making schools and were highly successful around the globe. This especially beautiful violin dates back to the time. The violin bears a Neuner & Hornsteiner 1881 label and is unmistakably a piece made by a matured craftmans hand. The thin coat of dark-red varnish with many marks and traces from playing is typical of Mittenwald style. Over the years the varnish has darkened and developed a lovely patina. The well-proportioned scroll and pegbox is a highly elegant carving placed on a robust neck. With minor repairwork this violin in offered very good condition and was meticulously set up in our atelier. It is ready to play and will win amateur and professional players over with its powerful, resonant sound, which is clear and rich in overtones, full of a pleasant clarity and strength.
