With its mature sound and its exceptional appearance of singular beauty, this southern German master violin from around 1800 ranks amongst violin-making history’s inspiring enigmas. At a glance the violin shows that its maker, whose name is not known, was remarkable in his well-honed aesthetic sensitivity, formidable talent as a craftsman, and extensive experience. The exceptionally magnificent woodsk and the premium evenly-grained spruce of the two-piece top are excellent sound woods whose quality has been tastefully accentuated by a radiant golden-brown varnish. A light patina creates the instrument’s appealing historic impression. This unique model has strikingly distinctive corners and sound holes, which could be the manifestation of a regional violin-making tradition, although these features may also be attributable to the stylistic originality of the unknown master luthier. If nothing else, however, the small and expressively carved scroll with its conspicuously high head can be interpreted as a clear sign that this instrument is of Bavarian origin. The experts at our atelier have carefully set up the violin with with the great care that is due an instrument which is this historically and musically valuable, and we now offer it in top condition and ready to play. It has been maintained in unusually good condition, crackfree. The violin’s distinctive, warm, complex, mature sound has an immediate response, making it a convincing choice for sophisticated musicians.
