The name of François Breton, a luthier in Mirecourt at the turn of the 19th century, was given to many solid French violins that were built between 1920 and 1972 in the leading workshops of Mirecourt. The violin we offer here, chosen by Leon Bernardel as indicated by a label, was made around the year 1920 and probably hails from the Laberte-Humbert Freres atelier. A beautiful example of its kind, it was originally intended for advanced amateurs and students and remains a delight to play to this day. The violin bears the typical Breton brandmark on its button and a “Breton brevete” label within. Bright orange-brown varnish on beautiful, well-chosen, skillfully worked tonewoods gives this French “Breton” violin its attractive appearance. It is further distinguished by its attractive, accentuated edges and a deeply carved, typical French scroll. This beautiful French violin is in extraordinarily good condition and has been well looked after. Our luthier has thoroughly gone over the instrument and made it ready to play. Its voice is clear and strong, brilliant and powerful, with a precise and mature character.
