Fine violin from the early work of Jean-Joseph Honoré Derazey around 1830 (certificate Hieronymus Köstler)

This French violin by Jean Joseph Honoré Derazey provides a fascinating glimpse into the early work of this influential Mirecourt master violin maker - and into the fledgling workshop of the great Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, whose closest collaborators Derazey, who was only a few years older, advanced to become during this period.

Made around 1830, this violin could indeed have served as a reference work for Derazey's application to Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume - and in this context, it stands as a reference to the highest artistic standards, as they were decisive not only for its maker, but also for the young Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. Thus, it already hints at both the awards that Honoré Derazey was to receive regularly at the major exhibitions in Paris and London from the late 1830s onwards, and the enormous commercial successes that Vuillaume was to celebrate in Paris and Derazey in Mirecourt from 1840 onwards. His consummately precise craftsmanship and sure sense of aesthetics and acoustics are evident in every detail of this instrument: From the fine, characterful carving of the scroll, to the perfectly cut soundholes, to the sophisticated purfling, to the masterful choice of regular spruce for the top and gently flamed maple for the one-piece back, this Derazey violin is a prime example of first-rate early 19th-century French violin making, the provenance of which is evidenced by the brand stamp inside the body. Crackfree and preserved in excellent condition, the antique bright golden-brown oil varnish with interesting playing marks tells of a long time in the hands of good, probably professional musicians, before this violin was gone through with the greatest care in our expert workshop and prepared ready to play.
