Interesting master violin after Mariani circa 1800

Violins such as this master instrument after Antonio Mariani made around 1800 rank amongst the most unusual and inspiring discoveries that can be made in the world of historic stringed instruments. In light of the idiosyncratic and dynamic style of the character the entire violin expresses, it is nearly impossible to believe that nothing can be learned about its origin, especially given its outstanding and well-balanced sound. The unknown master who crafted it demonstrated superior craftsmanship, beginning with the striking and irregularly grained spruce he chose to make the top with its interesting table. The gentle mild flaming of the one-piece maple back shows a mature aesthetic sense which also guided the way in which the luminous and very transparent varnish of a radiant golden-yellow was applied. The ribs are relatively low, and the sound holes have a unique shape; neither of these unusual features can conclusively be attributed to any particular region or school. We received this fascinating instrument in very good condition; a minor and insignificant repair was done at the lower rib, which is not uncommon in an instrument of this age. It has now been thoroughly worked over by the specialists at our atelier, and we warmly recommend this rare piece to demanding musicians. Its sophisticated, large and mature sound with its warm, deep and golden character offers them profound interpretive opportunities.
