Italian violin, Luigi Agostinelli, 1953

Since its earliest times, the Italian tradition of violin making has been able to take credit not only for the classical perfection of an Antonio Stradivari but also for the wild mastery of a Guarneri del Gesù. And to this day, it can still seem as if some Italian instruments emphasise their outstanding musical qualities by means of their charming originality and a casualness in the details of their craftsmanship. This particular Italian violin appears to belong to this tradition as well. It was made in 1953 by Luigi Agostinelli in Gubbio and bears its original signed label. Slightly asymmetrically arranged sound holes, purfling that was clearly applied with haste, highly interesting woods and a strong scroll rich in character all indicate the style of an artist who knew how to emphasise his own priorities. The luminous and bright golden yellow oil varnish is striking in its loveliness and it alone would draw the eye to this instrument with its large personality. As is fitting for good Italian violins, the crowning glory of this perfectly preserved, hand-crafted Luigi Agostinelli violin is its sound, which is warm, bright, brilliant and Italian in its expression.
