Work study: Detailed replica of a Vuillaume violin from 1827 - first-class masterpiece, Germany around 1870

This fine violin was made by an unknown German master around 1870, based on an original by the famous French violin maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875). It was probably made as a “bench copy”, i.e. a replica based on a Vuillaume violin that had been in the workshop for a while for repair or study. Such replicas often correspond to their models down to the finest details and are characterized by aesthetic and musical qualities that are close to or even equal to the original.

The exceptionally high artistic quality of this violin shows that its maker had every reason to attempt a replica of a genuine Vuillaume. Its creation is best imagined in a well-established workshop in one of the centers of German string instrument making at the time, such as Markneukirchen, or in a large city like Dresden or Berlin with a correspondingly highly developed musical culture. A brand stamp with the initials “MF” can be found inside the body, but it has not yet been possible to assign it to any known name. The handwritten label is dated 1827 and refers to the early period of Vuillaume's work at Leté. In terms of the quality of the wood and the varnish, the instrument bears a remarkable resemblance to originals from this period. The flowing, lively flaming of the two-piece maple back not only demonstrates the master's exquisite taste, but also that he had first-class materials at his disposal. The pegs with gold mother-of-pearl eyes reveal the great esteem in which this violin was held by its former owners. This Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume replica is in excellent condition and is an interesting instrument for discerning musicians. Its large, powerful sound is characterized by a mature and voluminous timbre and, with the open character of its sweet and clear trebles, allows unforgettable sound experiences in the interpretation of high-ranking literature from different eras.
