This historical violin is an expressive instrument which hails from the Bavarian violin making town of Mittenwald, where it was crafted in the early 19th century by a successor of Mathias “Dax” Hornsteiner. The eye-catchingly beautiful work on the scroll, the peg box and the delicate purfling are the hallmark of an exceptional luthier whose name has been lost to history. His sense of style is visible in the expansive arches and the narrow, vertically aligned sound holes. A thin coat of reddish-brown varnish flatters the gentle flaming of the maple used for the back, ribs and neck. The historic patina confirms the advanced age of the violin, and typical traces of use are evident, including carefully bushed peg holes and a few other repairs which all have no impact on the sound. Our experienced luthiers have meticulously set up this violin and made it ready to play. It has a large, warm and full-bodied sound with an outstanding response, a voice with maturity and resonance we can recommend.
