This violin is a true rarity. It was crafted by George F. Johnston in 1949 in Auckland, New Zealand, as the original label confirms. A very unique instrument with a strong personality of its own, it is a comparatively small model that harkens back to its Italian inspiration. Its aesthetic is exceptional because of the very interesting tropical wood used to make it. The broad-grained top and two-piece back as well as the scroll and neck show a multi-facetted geometric play of light and colour underneath the transparent golden-yellow varnish. The violin is in undamaged condition and has a light patina and a few traces of use. It expresses its nuanced sound with a voice that is large and powerful, clear, warm and full of good volume.
