This early 20th century English violin by Dykes & Sons, London is an extraordinarily beautiful instrument with an antique appearance as accurate and precise as its full-bodied, mature voice. It bears the original Dykes & Sons maker's label inside the body as well as an inventory number from the legendary atelier W.E. Hill & Sons stamped into the fingerboard. Transparent, gleaming varnish of an orange-brown colour and beautiful antique patina express the individual character of this lovely old English violin. Slight signs of playing show this good English violin has been well-played. The purfling was executed with great precision, with very close edgework and a delicate beesting which clearly demonstrates the flawless craftsmanship of this maker. The violin is a responsive instrument, offered in perfect playing condition, worked over and set up by our luthiers. The English violin's extremely large sound which is warm and textured, is well-balanced — clear and open in the upper ranges, mature and warm in the lower — and invites the player to explore its unique, attractive tonal character. Professional violinist's recommendation.
