Anton Ostler was an exceptional historic talent in southern German violin making history. At the age of 13, he began his studies at the famous Mittenwald violin making school in his hometown, thus striking out on a path which was ideal for him in light of the extraordinary musical and artisanal talents which he had demonstrated even as a small child. Ostler pursued further training in Munich, Nancy and Saarbrücken, and later he served in WWI before he was able to return to Mittenwald and establish himself as an independent master. Anton Ostler quickly achieved a position of high esteem amongst musicians and experts; the fact that he was unable to attain greater success is attributed, especially in historic literature, to his lack of business acumen. Consequently, the few authentic existing Anton Ostler instruments, and those of his son, Franz Ostler, are considered true rarities we have seen of impressive quality superior to the quality of this instrument. Even the unusual and experimental appearance of this violin not detract from the attractive charm of the luminous orange-red and subtly glossy oil varnish, which is considered as one of the hallmarks of Anton Ostler's personal style. The expressive and flawless carving of the scroll made in the Mittenwald style reflects the full talent and extensive experience of the craftsman of this violin. Maintained with a minor f-wing repair only in good condition, this interesting Mittenwald violin is in top musical condition.
