German master violin maker Otto Gläsel, who founded his workshop in Gelsenkirchen in 1919, made this master violin late in his career around 1950, shortly before his daughter took over the business in the late 1950's. This originally labeled Otto Gläsel master violin is a successfully rendered copy of a Stradivarius model. Exquisite tonewoods are testament to this master's finely honed aesthetic sensibility; its meticulous workmanship reflects its maker's excellent craft and musical knowledge who was in his late years when he created this violin. The harmonious look of the instrument is defined by the evenly and deeply flamed maple which was used to make the ribs and the two-piece back. The soundholes are carved elegantly and with great precision in the medium grained spruce. The transparent yet richly applied oil varnish has a luminous golden-brown color, and its slight patina shows that the instrument's previous owners took special care of it but also played it frequently. Crackfree and undamaged, this good master violin by Ernst Gläsel is a rare beauty in top condition. Its sound is as strong and precise as it is mature and warm, balanced, bright and warm, with some sweetness in the upper ranges, is a pleasure to play.
