French cello bow, Émile François Ouchard (certificate by Bernard Millant)

This French cello bow was jointly crafted by Ouchard père et fils and was produced in the early 1920s, shortly after they opened their independent family-operated atelier in Mirecourt. Up until then, Émile François Ouchard formally taught his son Émile Auguste under the roof of the famous workshop of Eugène Cuniot (Cuniot-Hury), which Ouchard père took over in 1910 and ran until 1923. As a strict teacher who was inspired by professional craftsmanship, he played a key part in ensuring that Émile Auguste Ouchard successfully became a bow maker who was as creative as he was confident. Ouchard fils’ bows ranked amongst the finest pieces of the Ouchard workshop. The strong stick made of premium dark brown pernambuco has a finely crafted head that is exceptionally elegant. A Parisian eye decorates the silver-mounted ebony frog with a capsule button. The bow weighs 80.9 g; its balance point is located at 25.2 cm of its 71.3 cm and feels as if it inclines slightly towards the frog, giving musicians a particularly voluminous sound with a large, warm tone. As is the case with many high-quality historic string instruments and bows, time has left a few traces: a minor repair at the end of the stick was carefully made by the experts at our atelier for restoration. The cello bow now is ready to play and in excellent condition. Its authenticity is confirmed by a certificate issued by Bernard Millant, Paris.
