The original label and a signature in the inside of the body confirm its provenance: it is a 1994 instrument from the atelier of Kenneth Grimley in Southport-Ainsdale. The expressively carved scroll further highlights the English character of this cello, which has a distinctive aesthetic with its moderately high and sweeping arch and its obliquely angled sound holes. The glossy deep-red spirit varnish coats outstanding tone woods whose quality is immediately apparent with a glance at the interesting flaming of the two-piece maple back. We received the instrument in prime condition, and our luthiers worked it over thoroughly and have made it ready to play.
