Rainer Leonhardt represents the third generation of his family to run the studio. Rainer Leonhardt's father, Wilfried, was trained under his own father-in-law, Anton Dietl, and took over the atelier in 1968, at which point the focus shifted to cellos. Instruments of especially high quality are branded with the Leonhardt family mark, a lyre in a circle, which can be seen on this back of this Rainer Leonhardt cello below the button. The inside of the body is signed by the luthier. The delicately flamed two-piece maple back clearly indicates the high quality of the wood that was selected and the great care with which it was crafted. The accurately applied purfling and elegantly carved, graceful scroll are the work of an experienced hand. Our restoration experts professionally repaired minor damage to the top and the neck mortise. These areas have no effect whatsoever on this cello's solistic, carrying sound, which is warm, with depth and well-rounded.
