Mittenwald 3/4 violin, circa 1880, made for Braun & Hauser Munich

The sound of this historic children's violin has a rare quality that will motivate young musicians: it gives talented violin students far more in the way of interpretative potential and musical enjoyment than can usually be expected from a 3/4-sized instrument. Made for Braun & Hauser Munich around 1880 in the traditional Bavarian violin-making village of Mittenwald, this attractive historic 3/4 violin shows the careful work of an experienced luthier. The well-selected tone woods from the forests of the Karwendel mountains and the high-quality craftsmanship both meant that it was likely to be an instrument from the famous ateliers of Neuner & Hornsteiner, which were at the zenith of their international success during this period. The edges and purfling, and most notably the expressive carving of the small and delicate scroll, are of a quality rarely found amongst violins for children. The orange-brown varnish, which built up a fine patina over time, features a few touch-ups which are the inevitable hallmark of a child's instrument. Our luthiers completely set up this violin which is undamaged in excellent condition and made it ready to play. We recommend it particularly because of its exceptionally warm, powerful, rounded tone rich in character superior to many 4/4 sized violins.
