An extremely rare historical 1/2 master violin of this size - a typical instrument by Aegidius Klotz, crafted in the finest quality from precious woods from the Karwendel mountains.

Aegidius Klotz (1733-1805) was the grandson of the famous founder of the Mittenwald violin-making tradition Mathias Klotz and is considered one of the most influential masters of his family. In his late work, he once again turned to the little-noticed subject of children's violins - and with the 1/2 violin offered here, made in 1796, he created a historical rarity at the highest level of violin making.

Aegidius Klotz, whose entire oeuvre is imbued with the spirit of craftsmanship excellence and artistic freedom, clearly did not regard this children's violin as a minor commission; rather, he took the greatest care in making a true master instrument that is worthy of his rank in every respect: The fine to medium-grained spruce of the top and the delicately flamed maple of the two-piece back, the ribs and the scroll are first-class tonewoods from the Karwendel region. The lovingly crafted scroll and the typical purfling, as well as the characterful sound holes, demonstrate perfect precision down to the smallest detail. An equal top performance is provided by a soundpost that was probably made by the renowned W. E. Hill & Sons - one of the top addresses in the world of historical string instruments. Enigmatic circular marks on the top are probably evidence of geometric explorations by small hands using a compass; they are part of the long history of this Aegidius Klotz violin, which, by its very nature, has probably been in the possession of children for most of its existence. Today, this 1/2 violin is a true museum collector's item, but it also deserves to be played again by a talented young musician.
