Rare affordable viola from Mirecourt, 1920
This French viola is a good, simple quality trade instrument from around 1920 with a truly beautiful appearance. The viola was made in the Laberte workshop in Mirecourt and bears the company's "copie de Stradivarius" model label. Its style indicates the trade quality work from the Mirecourt ateliers not only because of its overall design, but especially because of the high standard of craftsmanship and musical quality it reflects. The light-brown varnish is very transparent, allowing the beautiful grain of the premium tone woods to shine through: spruce with a medium grain that becomes more widely spread towards the edges, and mildly flamed maple for the back and ribs. In typical French commercial quality between the wars, the fingerboard is worked in ebony substitute. The purfling is also indicated due to the shortage of ebony at the time. After having been carefully approved by our luthiers, this undamaged French viola is being offered in very good condition and ready to play. Its sophisticated, bright, beautiful sound is warm, resonant and well rounded but also features great precision.
