Master viola by Eric Voigt, Manchester

It would be no mistake to regard Eric Voigt's Manchester-based atelier as a place where important European violin-making traditions came together – nor would it be an error to see this delicately crafted and large modern viola as proof of the outstanding works emerge at such internationally-influenced sites. Eric Voigt's artisanal heritage was shaped in part by French-influenced British violin making: around the turn of the century, his father, Paul Arno Voigt, came to Manchester to work for the highly respected Thomas Earle Hesketh. Hesketh in turn was a student of Georges Adolphus Chanot, a bridge builder with an excellent French style who made a major name for himself in England. Chanot's violin No. 79 is a perfect model of this tradition. P. A. Voigt's work reflected another strong influence which was rooted in his outstanding training under Ernst Reinhold Schmidt in Markneukirchen. In our catalogue, the 1910 master violin by E. R. Schmidt is an excellent representation of this influence on the English branch of the Voigt family. The 1963 "birth year" of Eric Voigt's viola is confirmed by its original label, and the instrument does honour to the great names that inspired it, both in its compelling aesthetic as well as in its excellent sound, which is worthy of solo performance. The attractive arch in the style of the classic master Amati and the expressively carved scroll are powerful accents created by a sure and experienced hand. At 42.5 cm in length, this large master viola is set in its best light by a luminous golden-yellow and highly transparent oil varnish. There was minor damage at the left sound hole which has no impact on the sound, and the repair was performed as professionally and meticulously as an instrument of this kind deserves.
