The luminous red of the thickly applied oil varnish serves as a powerful and unmistakable manifestation of the confidence with which this lovely modern viola was crafted. It hails from the well-respected atelier of Alan R. Payne in the Welsh town of Machynlleth. The viola was crafted in the year 1973, and its authenticity is confirmed by the original dated label. Payne gave this instrument its rich individual character through the exceptionally lovely carving of the scroll, and with its moderately high arch, gentle fluting and accentuated edges, the viola conveys the flawless art of an experienced hand. The overall aesthetic impression it creates is harmonious and perfect, right down to the tight flames of the two-piece maple back and the similar lines of the ribs. We received this interesting piece in perfect condition and went over it completely in our atelier for restoration. It is now ready to play, and it has a compelling sound which is bright, open and slightly sweet.
