An outstanding instrument for professionals and soloists, this fine historic soloist viola is an interesting and extremely powerful instrument which was made around 1800, most likely in England. A premium piece by an unknown luthier, its musical history led it on a journey through Europe, as a dated repair label indicates. In 1836, minor repairs were made to it in Lausanne, Switzerland; the small and delicately crafted scroll was grafted on, which was routinely done on extensively-played older stringed instruments. The fact that this label was included as a little written document of its passing through Switzerland can be interpreted as an expression of how much it was appreciated. And rightfully so, since the craftsman who produced this instrument showed a refined sense of both aesthetics as well as musical sensitivity. The one-piece back is made of exquisitely delicate and tightly-flamed maple, and the two-piece top of sophisticated spruce features an unusually even grain. Both were coated with reddish-brown varnish on a golden-brown base, emphasizing the quality of these outstanding tone woods as part of a harmonious entity. The broad bee-sting corners and distinctive rounding of the upper bouts are the finishing touches to the inimitable character of this soloist viola, which has been kept in excellent condition and has undergone a few acoustically insignificant minor repairs to the lower part of the top. After having been carefully set up by the specialists at our workshop, it is now ready to play. It is a compelling choice with a voice that is both warm and clear, extremely loud, rich in overtones, radiance, and clarity. Our recommendation for professionals and soloist players.
