At a small body length of 38.1 cm, it is very pleasant to play and offers potential for virtuoso interpretation in a manner that very few other violas can. Its musical qualities are further confirmation of the good reputation that early 19th-century Klingenthal stringed instruments enjoy amongst demanding musicians. Such instruments reflect the high standard of the Klingenthal guild at that time, where it was common not to indicate craftsmen by name on the label. This viola can be regarded as an example of premium artisanry, not least because of its narrowly flamed one-piece maple back and the lovely carving of the strong grafted scroll.
