First-class violin bow from the golden age of French bow making by J. T. L.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the renowned house of J. T. L. offered excellent pieces in its “C. Buthod a Paris” series, which, with reference to its founding figure Charles Buthod, set standards in international bow making. The violin bow offered here, made around 1920, is an epitome of the consistently high level of J. T. L.'s ateliers during this period of their history, with its large, warm sound and its typically French, highly precise playing characteristics.

The selection of high-quality reddish-brown pernambuco for the medium-strength, round stick is an indication of the excellent equipment of the J.T.L. ateliers, which had long since developed into an incubator of craftsmanship excellence during this period. The excellent weight distribution of the violin bow with a broad and centered balance point that leans slightly toward the lower half is the work of an experienced hand that knew how to emphasize the musical quality of its work with an aesthetically restrained, high-quality nickel silver mount, an ebony frog with a mother-of-pearl eye and a three-part button. We added this J. T. L. violin bow to our Corilon catalogue after we had confirmed that it was in flawless condition; a certificate from the renowned expert for French bows, J.-F. Raffin, confirms its origin.
