This German masterpiece is a violin of excellent quality. As its dated original label confirms, it was made in 1954 in the atelier of Knorr in Oldenburg – a name that hearkens back to the Saxonian violin-making tradition of Markneukirchen. The expertly crafted arch of this instrument, which was patterned after a Stradivarius model, reflects the work of a well-trained and experienced hand, as do the fluted sound holes and fine, narrow purfling which runs close to the beautiful lines of the accented edges. The moderately-grained spruce of the top and the two-piece back of flamed maple are set in their best light by a coat of orange-brown oil varnish. Our luthiers set up this undamaged and crack-free violin and made it ready to play. The instrument will win you over with its powerful sound full of character, a voice which is somewhat dark in its lower registers and is slightly stern.
