This antique violin by Hermann Meinel is a 150 year old instrument from Klingenthal in Saxony, and it can be taken as a pattern of violins from this place and time. The chosen tonewoods, especially the flamed maple of the back and the ribs, and the thinly applied, yellow-brown varnish with strong patina are very characteristic. The large scroll shows the tendency in these times to copy the main features of the Italian style of violin making. Nevertheless, the craftsmanship of the Saxon violin makers was beyond doubt, as the finely crafted purfling demonstrates impressively. We offer this excellent violin, that is labeled on the inner upper block, ready to play, with a minor repair of the pegbox, that is without any impact on its sound. Our luthier worked over the instrument thoroughly and made it ready to play, so it unfolds its warm, bright voice, that is radiant and rich in overtones.
