Contemporary Italian violin in the Otello Bignami tradition, Luigi Laterrenia

This modern Italian violin of the Bologna school is a 1997 work by Luigi Laterrenia who studied under the legendary Otello Bignami (1914-1989), one of the foremost Italian luthiers of the 20th century. World-famous soloists like David Oistrach have treasured instruments by Otello Bignami, who taught intensively from 1979 onward, thus influencing a generation of luthiers. Laterrenia’s violin may be considered a “grandchild” of this tradition, and especially the quality of varnish does full justice to its predecessors. Well chosen tonewoods are the source of this instrument’s strong personality. The top is made of premium, moderately grained spruce, while the strikingly beautiful back, ribs and neck are composed of deeply flamed maple with a particularly lovely grain. The simple but harmonous appearance of the scroll corresponds to the whole. Slight traces of use attest to the superb musical qualities of this violin that features a warm and mature, radiant, strong Italian sound. This is an unmistakably contemporary Italian violin that meets high artistic demands.
