The powerful, large, soloist sound of this contemporary master violin is a vivid tribute to the role that its home town of Markneukirchen played as an international centre of artisanal violin making, both historically and in works crafted today. With its superlative musical properties, the rather young violin dating back to 1981 meets professional standards and has proven to be an instrument which fully honours its good heritage in every way. Its maker, Eckart Richter, was born in 1936 and is a great-grandson of Ernst Reinhold Schmidt, one of the leading figures in Markneukirchen violin making in the late 19th century, and a name that made history as one of the most successful entrepreneurs of his age. Richter himself learned his craft under Werner Voigt, a long-time employee of Henry Werro, and under Willi Lindörfer in Weimar, a student of Otto Möckel. In the 1970s and 1980s, he frequently served on the jury at the highly regarded Henryk Wieniawski violin competition in Poznan. This instrument is a mature piece based on an attractive Guarneri model, and Eckart Richter selected premium tone woods which had aged for decades. The delicate and expressive grain of the spruce top and the beautiful gently falling flames of the single-piece maple back under a rich and luminous orange-brown oil varnish give the violin its inimitable aesthetic. Its well-proportioned and deeply carved scroll demonstrates the exceptionally successful work of an experienced hand. This exceptional violin has earned our special recommendation not only because of its harmonious and elegant appearance, but also because of its flexible and multi-facetted sound which blends character, radiance and volume. The upper registers feature a note of sweetness.
