Made in 1900 by Frank Watson in Rochdale, Lancastershire, this English violin is an excellent instrument for serious musicians. Its dated and numbered original label indicates that it is opus #38 by a master who enjoyed the respect of international violin experts, even during his lifetime. This elegant violin is a distinct and unmistakable expression of his personal model. Frank Watson's imperious style is evident in the smallest detail, down to the oblique position of the sound holes, the small scroll on a sturdy peg box, his monogram as a brand mark on the back, and the thick layer of oil varnish in the orange-brown shade he preferred. These elements all confirm his flawless abilities as a craftsman, as does the purfling that was applied very close to the edges. This highly recommended violin is in perfect condition with the exception of an insignificant flaw in the varnish on the back. It was set up and made ready to play in by our restoration specialists. The dark, mature sound is clear and strong.
