Excellent violin from Machold’s custom violin workshop, Chemnitz

This violin was crafted around 1930-1940 at the workshop of master luthier Oskar Machold. It is an instrument with an exceptionally lovely sound, and its provenance is confirmed by the mark inside the body that reads “Kunstgeigenbau Machold,” his workshop for individually made violins. This instrument was the work of a highly regarded restorer who received the first commission to save the thoroughly destroyed Dresden “Number 26” Stradivari in 1961. Oskar Machold took over the workshop of his stepfather and teacher Adolf Harras in 1929, gradually establishing a solid name for himself on a national level because of the excellent sound and meticulous varnish of his instruments. This violin, which has been preserved in outstanding condition, is a powerful statement about the high quality of Oskar Machold’s new instruments. The magnificent lines of the moderately-grained spruce top and the striking deep flames of the one-piece maple back and ribs reflect the self-confident style of a master who clearly pursued demanding standards. Flawless craftsmanship are evident in the deeply carved scroll as well as the competently executed purfling and sound holes. The orange-reddish varnish appears to have been applied at a later date or protected by another transparent later several years after the fact; the varnish highlights the eye-catching aesthetic of this fine violin, which has been kept in virtually crack-free condition with only a minor repair to the sound hole. The luthiers at our workshop have completely set it up and made it ready to play. It is the best violin in its price sector in our catalogue, and it has earned a special recommendation for its warm and well-balanced flute-like yet clear and radiant sound full of timbre.
