Jean-Baptiste Salomon (1713-1767) was a leading representative of the second generation of the École vieux Paris, and in his most successful phase of work he created this fine and exquisite sounding violin, in which the best qualities of old Parisian violin making come to the fore.
After 15 arduous years in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Salomon, who was born in Rheims and presumably trained by his father, experienced a hard-won boom: in his new workshop at the Place de l'Ecole, Salomon created first-class instruments such as the violin offered here - a mature, magnificent violin whose outstanding sound characteristics and fine aesthetics reveal why its maker rose to become a highly respected exponent of the Parisian violin-making scene in the following period and was elected guild master in 1760. The elegant, expressive scroll indicates the high level of his art, which is expressed by the large, radiant and mature sound of this J.-B. Salomon violin. With the original SALOMON A PARIS stamp on the back, it is in excellent, authentic condition, which includes two visible but tonally meaningless and highly professional repairs to the top on the left and right lower bout as common traces of its great age. After a thorough inspection and examination in our expert restoration workshop, we offer this classical French violin in immediate playing condition, with a certificate confirming its value.
