Fine 18th century violin of the Thir school, circa 1750 (certificate by Hieronymus Köstler)

This fine violin made around 1750 clearly embodies defining features of the Thir (Vienna) and Füssen school, an early tradition where Italian masters as Gorgio Bayrhoff and Michael Platner, too have their origins. Fine violins of the Thir / Füssen school rank among the most pristine and fascinating of historical stringed instruments, even in cases such as this one when they cannot be attributed to a particular master craftsman. This fine 18th century violin combines brilliance and colors in its sound and features a typically ancient undertone that is bright, strong and resonant. The brilliantly flamed maple back is marked by austere beauty, as is the top, which is made of finest regular spruce and has distinctively carved baroque sound holes.
