In the 20th century, the highly esteemed London atelier Beare & Son imported violins of outstanding quality (primarily from France, England and Germany) which it used to establish evocative brand names such as “Giovanni Battista Rugginelli” , “Giuseppe Maravelli” or “François Barzoni.” Even experts often thought these names belonged to actual historic luthiers, a fact which indicates the high standards at which the best manufacturers of the European continent worked at that time. This beautiful old Beare & Son violin labeled "Rugginelli" and dated 1902 was crafted in France, and it is an impressive reflection of an unknown master's magnificent artisanal sensitivity and abilities. The tone woods of rare and eye-catching beauty and the dark orange-brown, highly transparent varnish pay tribute to the Italian violins that inspired it. Furthermore, the stylish visual aesthetic of this violin is an excellent match for its outstanding sound, which is warm, sophisticated and mature, resonant and powerful.
