The years 1920-21 represented a turning point in the biography of Hamburg violin maker Georg Winterling, a late-in-life new beginning for a master violin maker who was already in his sixties. He had spent 30 years in Hamburg making himself a highly respected name as a creator of the finest instruments, a sought-after restorer and knowledgeable dealer of historical violins. And then, in 1920, he left the north and moved to the tranquil village of Krailling outside Munich. His employees Anton Schreiber and Anton Lugert bought the Hamburg atelier from their teacher, and to this day it still bears his good name.
This particular master violin by Georg Winterling is a mature instrument; it is dated 1905 and is one of his most beautiful pieces. With its self-possessed aesthetic, both the sound and appearance of this magnificent violin express the genius of its maker, who is seen as one of the most important German master luthiers of modern times. The delicate and relatively narrow purfling as well as the very distinctive scroll both convey a character that is as nuanced as it is elegant. The interesting grain of the premium tone woods is strikingly beautiful, as is the play of colours of the fine golden-orange oil varnish on a golden-yellow background. This Georg Winterling violin has been preserved with minor restoration in outstanding condition, and our restoration expert has worked this violin over to the highest standard. It is highly responsive with its wonderful melting sound that is bright, rich in overtones and powerful, resonant and full of mature character. The price includes a certificate of authenticity by Hieronymus Köstler.
