As a 16-year-old, Sergio Maria Martinoli (1929-2007) began his violin-making career by creating an instrument out of cardboard. The young man's tinkering indicates the fascination he felt about the violin which inspired him until well into his old age to generate perfect masterpieces full of character. This particular master violin features a unique scroll that is unmistakably Italian in its style. The light, luminous orange-brown oil varnish with its charming slight crackling and a few traces of use is also typically Sergio Martinoli in terms of its quality and richness; he was known for giving his instruments at least 40 coats of varnish. The bright, clear sound which is strong in overtones has a warm and gentle aspect in its lower registers. It is an Italian violin which is well suited for professional standards, very responsive and playable. The violin is sold with a minor repair which is concealed by the chin rest. Our luthier worked over the violin carefully and made it ready to play. The price includes a certificate of authenticity from Sergio Martinoli.
