Fine master violin by Heinrich Paul Theodor Heberlein, the last master luthier of the Markneukirchen Heberlein dynasty, a long line of eminent violin-makers in Markneukirchen. Heberlein received his training at various renowned German workshops, spent several fruitful years in the U.S.A. and had begun to work in the family atelier when his career was rudely interrupted by the Second World War. Upon his return to Saxony in 1954, he was the fifth generation to assume the direction of the “Heinrich Th. Heberlein Jr” business. In the early 1960s, his work received international acclaim: for instance, one of his instruments won an award in Posen in 1962. Heberlein’s death in 1975 brought a significant chapter of the German violin-making tradition to a close. His final work, a violin of the same year, took its place in the Markneukirchen Musical Instrument Museum. The 1920 master violin we offer here, which our luthier has thoroughly looked over and made ready to play, bears the Heberlein original label and remains with a repaired saddle crack in good condition and impressively exemplifies the qualities for which Heberlein’s master instruments are known. The violin was built with great care and exquisite workmanship, down to the last detail. Very evenly grained spruce was selected for the top and flamed maple for the back—premium wood for optimal visual aesthetics and sound, beautifully enhanced by a light, transparent oil varnish that shows expressive traces from playing.
