Mittenwald violin, approx. 1780, Bartholomäus Karner school

The mature and highly adaptable sound of this Mittenwald violin comes from a true musical personality of the late 18th century, the sort of instrument that is hard to find nowadays. It features a timbre-rich voice full of distinctive character which blends both warmth and the sweetness of a flute in its upper registers. Its maker is unknown to us, a Mittenwald maker influenced by the Bartholomäus Karner school. The expressive style and the master violins’s outstanding craftsman quality alone serve as a testimony to its master’s skill. The scroll was delicately and tastefully carved; a later generation carefully filled the woodworm tracks with the appropriate precision and respect; and the peg box has been reimnforced with patches and bushed, as is worthy of such an excellent violin. Experience and solid craftsman training are also apparent in the flat table and the vertically aligned sound holes which now, nearly 250 years later, are a harmonious complement to the historic aesthetic of the varnish. The thick patina and traces of age bear witness to a long musical history, and so does the minor repair on the right lower rib, which has no effect whatsoever on the playing and tonal properties of this violin. The instrument has been preserved in outstanding condition, given its advanced age. After having been completely set up by the experts at our atelier, it is now - as all Corilon instruments - in excellent condition and ready to play. We especially recommend it for musicians with exacting standards who will appreciate an instrument with a distinctive profile and a broad range of expressive opportunities.
