Mittenwald violin, J. A. Baader, No. 906 (Appraisal W.E. Hill & Sons)

This historic Mittenwald violin was made in 1898. It is a large instrument for male players with a body measuring 36.5 cm, and it features the original label, which is dated and numbered 906. The violin was crafted at the workshops of J. A. Baader, the most influential Bavarian violin making company of its time along with Neuner & Hornsteiner. There is also a letter by the famed experts of W. E. Hill & Sons in London confirming the violin's authenticity. This rare and truly unique model was inspired by the classic Italian master Maggini, whose style can be clearly and unmistakably seen in the characteristic diagonally positioned narrow sound holes. The detailed carving on the scroll is full of playful charm; it is the work of a talented and experienced master, as are the accentuated edges and the one-piece back of dramatically flamed maple. An attractive historic patina and traces of use flatter the luminously golden-orange varnish and are becoming in a quality instrument of this age. This highly recommended and perfectly maintained instrument was set up carefully in our atelier and given new rosewood fittings. It is now ready to play, and with its bright open voice a fine reflection of Mittenwald tradition.
