This powerful German master violin is a rare expression of the modern violin making tradition of Markneukirchen. It belonged to a collection, making it an exceptionally pure representation of its heritage as a virtually new instrument which has never been played. It was crafted by Paul Knorr in 1960 and bears his brand mark and dated label on the inside of the body. Its self-confident aesthetic is an excellent example of this renowned master’s later works. Paul Knorr learned his craft from his father, Albert Knorr, Senior, who in turn was a student of Max Dölling. After being trained in the finest artisanal traditions of Saxony's Vogtland region, Paul Knorr then worked in Breslau and Berlin, where he evolved into a knowledgeable restorer before ultimately becoming the head of Robert Beyer's highly-decorated workshop. In 1921, he opened his own workshop in his home town. At a single glance, it is clear that the violin presented here is a Markneukirchen original, with its orange-reddish oil varnish on a luminous yellow base coat over premium-quality tone woods. The tight vivid flames of the one-piece maple back and extremely even grain of the spruce top are enhanced by the striking purfling and the elegantly carved sound holes, creating a well-balanced and dynamic aesthetic. The violin has been carefully set up at our workshop and made ready to play, and Its brilliant voice is a magnificent match to its appearance. With a powerful sound full of timbre, it has a crisp response and great volume, opening up excellent interpretation options for soloist performance.
